About the Methanococcus maripaludis S2 May 2004 (metMar1) assembly (sequences)

Species Information

The Methanococcus maripaludis S2 genome is 1.66 Million bp long and contains approximately 1772 predicted genes. M. maripaludis S2 is a mesophilic methanogen which was isolated from salt marsh sediment in South Carolina. It grows on carbon dioxide and hydrogen, producing methane.

Taxonomy: Archaea; Euryarchaeota; Methanococci; Methanococcales; Methanococcaceae; Methanococcus.

Sequencing: The sequence was released May 2004 by the University of Washington, and was described in J Bacteriol 186:6956-69 (2004) Hendrickson EL, Kaul R, Zhou Y, Bovee D, Chapman P, et al.."Complete genome sequence of the genetically tractable hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanococcus maripaludis."

Abstract: The genome sequence of the genetically tractable, mesophilic, hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanococcus maripaludis contains 1,722 protein-coding genes in a single circular chromosome of 1,661,137 bp. Of the protein-coding genes (open reading frames [ORFs]), 44% were assigned a function, 48% were conserved but had unknown or uncertain functions, and 7.5% (129 ORFs) were unique to M. maripaludis. Of the unique ORFs, 27 were confirmed to encode proteins by the mass spectrometric... [Click above reference link for full abstract]

The Archaeal Genome Browsers at UCSC were developed by members of theLowe Lab (Kevin Schneider,Katherine Pollard, Andy Pohl, Todd Lowe) and Robert Baertsch, with significant support fromthe UCSC Human GenomeBrowser group. The Archaeal Browsers are run by a slightly modifiedversion of the UCSC Human GenomeBrowser system. All queries, bug reports, content corrections, suggested improvements, and new track data submissions should be sent to Todd Lowe (lowe@soe.ucsc.edu).
